The Democratic Innovator
Kintarō Hattori founded Seiko in Tokyo in 1881, and the company has since delivered more firsts than most brands combined: the first Japanese wristwatch (1913), the first quartz wristwatch (Astron, 1969), the first GPS solar watch (Astron GPS, 2012), and the Spring Drive movement. Seiko is vertically integrated to an extreme degree — it makes its own movements, cases, dials, hands, crystals, and even the oils and lubricants. The SKX007 became the most popular affordable dive watch in history. The Presage line offers enamel and textured dials at entry-level prices that embarrass competitors. For collectors, Seiko represents extraordinary craft accessible to everyone.
Produced Japan's first wristwatch (1913). Created the first quartz wristwatch — the Quartz Astron (1969). Vertically integrated manufacture.
Vintage Seiko divers (6105, 6159, 62MAS) have appreciated dramatically. Modern limited editions sell out and trade above retail. Best value-per-dollar in horology.
