John Harrison spent 45 years solving the greatest scientific problem of the 18th century: determining longitude at sea. His H4 chronometer, completed in 1759, lost only 5 seconds over 81 days at sea — saving countless lives and enabling the age of exploration. It lives at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich.
